Biography of
Pandit Indrajit Banerjee
Pandit Indrajit Banerjee is one of the leading exponents of the Maihar Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music. He was born into a musical family with a remarkable number of accomplished artists, including his guru Pandit Kartick Kumar (Sitar), Pandit Barun Kumar Pal (Hamsa Veena), Niladri Kumar (Sitar), Partho Das (Sitar), and Aparna Roy (Surbahar). He drew early inspiration from his sitarist mother, Manju Banerjee, who was a disciple of the late Nikhil Banerjee and Santosh Banerjee.
His training began with his maternal grandfather, Bankim Kumar Pal, who was a disciple of Inayat Khan and Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhuri (Kochi Babu). He then studied under Pandit Manilal Nag of the Bishnupur Gharana, and later took intensive training from his uncle, Pandit Kartick Kumar, who is a senior disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar.
He is an A-grade artist of All India Radio and National Television, a Panel Artist for the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, and has served as a judge for A.I.R. (Kolkata).
He was awarded the Gokul Nag Memorial Medal in 1987 by Bangia Sangeet Parishad (West Bengal), "Sur Mani" in 1990 by Sur Sringal Samsad Bombay, and Avinav Kala Samman in 1997 by Avinav Kala Parishad (Bhopal). Parangotsava-2007 in Mysore recognized him as a Veteran (Pandit). In 2014 he was awarded for exceptional contribution by SAPNA IL USA, received the Tech World Music Reno Excellence Award in December 2017, and the South Asian Distinguished Artist Hall of Fame Award in September 2019.
Indrajit has toured extensively across the U.K., Europe, Caribbean Islands, Lebanon, Hawaii, Alaska, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Canada. He has collaborated with several Western artists including Sting (Channel V Awards), Steve Smith, Yaron Herman, Abbos Kosimov, Fareed Haque, Jeff Coffin, Stefan Lessard, Carter Beauford, and others. He has also performed with Lettuce, Mamadou Diabate, and was part of the Atash ensemble.
He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris. He has several solo sitar albums to his credit and has been featured on many albums. His music is available on iTunes, CDBaby, Spotify, Pandora, and Last.fm. He is also a composer and has arranged music for several albums and award-winning documentary films, including Cloth Paper Dreams (2014), directed by Greg Davis — a short documentary following pilgrims to India's Kumbh Mela, the world's largest spiritual gathering.
Most recently, Indrajit released Pravas, a stunning new album with acclaimed tabla maestro Subrata Bhattacharya, out June 2026. Recorded at 512 Studios in Austin, Texas, Pravas represents a deeply personal musical journey — the title meaning "journey" or "voyage" in Sanskrit — showcasing the two artists' profound connection and mastery of the Hindustani classical tradition.
Indrajit is the founder of the Antara School of Indian Classical Music in Austin, TX, and his instructional DVDs on sitar are popular worldwide
A clear, fluid sweetness combined with technical virtuosity and sensitivity.
